my first structured skirt

It's not perfect, but it's my first attempt at a real structured skirt and I like it well enough.

The front, in a not-so-flattering picture taken by Alex:

The back:

And here's a close-up of my first ever darts and zipper (pre-waistband):

Pattern: New Look 6843, choice E
Fabric: 1 1/2 yards of random on-sale fabric from WalMart, probably only used a yard

real adventures into sewing

Even though I'm too broke to do it, I got some fabric and two patterns last night. Time to get this show on the road, eh?

While cutting my fabric, the lady said she had the perfect fabric for me and it was on sale for $1.50 a yard. She showed me the fabric you see below, which I didn't even need two full yards of for this skirt.

Falls a bit below the knees (hard to tell with Alex's crooked photography, yes?) and has a scalloped hem that was a bit of a pain to hem but worth it. The rest of the construction was fairly simple, no pattern just remembering how I made full circle skirts back in the days when I made my costumes for Ren Faire.

And instead of being lazy like I originally planned and folding over the top of the fabric to create a casing for the elastic, I actually cut and sewed a separate waistband for it. Huzzah. Definitely looks more polished than it would have the lazy way. And I got to use my zig-zag stitch over an edge, which I somehow find an excuse to do in nearly every project.

Next up:
- work shorts for Alex (just simple loose fitting elastic waist ones that can be beat up and washed a zillion times)
- an A-line skirt for me in a cute print I found that's a brown background with light teal polka dots... and my first zipper

hiatus

Going through some personal crap right now. No knitting getting done. Nothing productive happening.

So I guess a posting hiatus for now. Not that I really have any readers anyway.
